How to Write an AI Design Prompt That Returns a Usable Logo

Most disappointing AI logo results are not a model problem. They are a brief problem. Ask for "a modern logo for a coffee company" and you will get exactly that — a generic, over-detailed mark that looks fine at 800 px and turns to mush at 32. The fix is that a prompt is a design brief, and a design brief has components: what the mark is, what register it sits in, what it must survive, and what it must not include. Write those four things down and the hit rate changes immediately.

This guide covers how to construct that prompt, how to iterate without losing the thread, and — the part almost everyone skips — how to test the output before you commit a brand to it.

Why vague prompts produce generic marks

An image model returns the statistical middle of everything matching your description. "Modern", "clean", and "professional" describe roughly the entire commercial design output of the last two decades, so the middle of that set is by definition unremarkable. Specificity is not decoration; it is the only thing that moves the result away from the average.

There is a second, more practical reason. A generator has no idea where the logo will live. It does not know it needs to work as a 32 px favicon, on a dark header, embroidered on a shirt, and in one colour on an invoice. If you do not state the constraints, nothing in the process enforces them — and constraints are what make a mark usable rather than merely attractive.

The six components of a usable prompt

Think of these as slots. Fill each one, in roughly this order.

1. Mark type. Say what kind of thing you want, because these are genuinely different objects: a wordmark (the name set in type), a lettermark (initials), a pictorial mark (a recognisable object), an abstract mark (a geometric form), a combination mark (symbol plus name), or an emblem (type contained inside a shape). "Logo" alone lets the model pick, and it usually picks a combination mark with text — the hardest kind for a generator to get right.

2. Subject and concept. What the mark depicts and, more usefully, what idea it stands for. "A stylised bean" is weaker than "a single coffee bean whose seam reads as a river bend" — the second gives the model a structure to build.

3. Style register. Where the mark sits visually. Useful, concrete anchors: geometric and constructed on a grid; hand-drawn with visible ink weight; flat single-weight line art; solid silhouette; retro-modernist; monoline. Naming a drawing method works better than naming a mood.

4. Colour direction. Give a small, deliberate palette rather than "colourful". Two or three colours with roles ("deep forest green as the primary, warm sand as the only accent"), and say whether you want flat colour or gradients. Flat is usually the right answer for a logo, for reasons in the constraints section below.

5. Format constraints. This is the slot that separates a usable mark from a picture: on a plain white background, no drop shadow, no gradient, no photorealism, no 3D bevel, no mockup, no text. Constraints are worth more words than style is.

6. Negatives. State explicitly what you do not want, because models fill silence with clichés. For a lot of categories that means: no swooshes, no globe, no gear, no generic leaf, no lightbulb, no handshake.

Putting it together

A weak prompt:

A modern logo for an organic tea brand.

A prompt with all six slots filled:

A pictorial logo mark: a single tea leaf drawn as one continuous monoline stroke of even weight, geometric construction, closed silhouette, flat solid colour in deep olive green on a plain white background, centred, no text, no gradient, no shadow, no 3D, no photorealism, not a mockup, no swoosh, no circle badge.

The second one is not longer for its own sake. Every clause removes a failure mode you would otherwise have to discard by hand.

Why you should ask for the mark without the name

AI models are notoriously unreliable at rendering text inside images. Letterforms come back subtly malformed, kerned wrongly, or spelled as convincing nonsense — and a logo with a broken letter is not fixable by regenerating, only by redrawing.

The workable pattern is to separate the two jobs:

  1. Generate the symbol with "no text" stated explicitly in the prompt.
  2. Set the name yourself in a real typeface, in a design tool, then lock up the two.

Iterate one variable at a time

The most common mistake after the vague first prompt is the panicked rewrite — changing subject, style, and colour simultaneously, then having no idea which change helped.

Treat it like a controlled experiment:

  1. Fix the concept first. Generate a batch with style and colour deliberately plain. Choose the composition you like.
  2. Then move style only. Keep the subject wording identical; swap the drawing method (monoline → solid silhouette → geometric).
  3. Then colour only. Same mark, palette variations.
  4. Then simplify. Add reductive instructions: "fewer details", "thicker single stroke weight", "remove interior detail". Logos almost always improve by subtraction.

Keep a plain text file of prompts and which output each produced. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a process and a slot machine. If your tool exposes a seed or a "vary" control, hold the seed steady while you change one clause — that is what makes the comparison meaningful.

Test before you commit

A mark that looks good in a generator preview can still be unusable. Four checks, in ascending order of how often they fail things:

  • The small-size test. Scale the mark to about 32 px and look at it. Interior detail closes up, thin strokes disappear, and anything with more than a few shapes turns into a smudge. This kills more AI logos than any other check.
  • The one-colour test. Flatten it to solid black on white and to solid white on black. Gradients and tonal shading collapse here — which is why flat colour is the safer instruction. Anything that relies on a gradient to be readable will fail on an invoice, a stamp, or embroidery.
  • The background test. Place it on white, on your darkest brand colour, and over a photo. You need a version that survives all three, which usually means designing a solid-fill variant alongside the main one.
  • The resolution test. Generator output is raster — pixels. Enlarging it will soften the edges, which is precisely the problem described in why your logo looks blurry. A logo needs a vector version eventually, and getting there means either auto-tracing the raster and cleaning up the node mess by hand, or redrawing the accepted concept properly in a vector tool. Plan for that step rather than discovering it at the printer.

Two things to keep an eye on

Similarity. A model trained on existing design can return something close to a mark already in use. Before you commit, do a reverse image search on your chosen output and a straightforward search for existing logos in your category. This is a five-minute check that prevents an expensive rebrand.

Consistency across assets. A logo is one asset; a brand is a system. Once you have a mark you trust, carry its actual constraints — the palette values, the stroke weight, the clear space, the approved variants — into the rest of your assets rather than re-prompting from scratch each time. That is the job of a brand style guide, and it is what stops the fifth graphic looking like it belongs to a different company.

How long should an AI design prompt be?

Long enough to fill the six slots — typically one to three sentences. Beyond that, extra adjectives tend to compete rather than compound. If a prompt is not working, add a constraint or a negative rather than another descriptor.

Can I get a vector SVG straight out of a generator?

Is an AI logo good enough for a real business?

It can be a strong starting point, particularly for early-stage brands testing an identity.
